Senate says NO to Magu’s appointment as EFCC Chairman

The Senate has rejected Ibrahim Magu’s nomination as Chairman of the EFCC.The Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, who addressed journalists after a closed-door session on Thursday, said the rejection was based on “security report.”He said the rejection would be communicated to President Muhammadu Buhari to take further action.

Couple to die by hanging for murder!

An Osun State High Court sitting in Ile Ife has sentenced a couple, Fatai Jimoh and his wife, Lateefat, to death by hanging for armed robbery and murder of one Mrs. Bukola Taiwo of Ikeketu, Ile Ife.Justice Adedotun Onibokun, while delivering the judgment on Wednesday found the husband and wife guilty of the charges preferred against them.The prosecutor had told the court during the trial that Fatai strangulated the victim, while his wife smashed Taiwo’s head with a sledge hammer after which the couple removed the victim’s purse and stole N48,780.00.The Principal State Counsel, Mr. Faremi Moses, brought four witnesses to court and presented a sledge hammer which the couple used in murdering the victim and other exhibits before the court to prove the case.There was weeping and wailing inside the court as the judge delivered the verdict and policemen present had to order two aged men who were weeping out of the court room.

Court orders marriage of pregnant 13-year-old to her rapist

A Tunisian court has approved the marriage of a 13-year-old girl to a relative who made her pregnant, an official said Tuesday.The judgement triggered anger from non-governmental organisations which said the girl had been raped.The girl, from the northwestern region of Kef, had a sexual relationship with the brother of her brother-in-law.She was 13 years and 11 months old and “was not raped”, said Chokri Mejri, the court official.“We interviewed the girl and after verifying all the details, we considered her fit for marriage. As proof, she is pregnant,” he said.Under Tunisian law, sex with a girl under 15 without the use of force is punishable by six years in prison, but the culprit can halt proceedings by marrying the victim.“The two families demanded marriage to avoid a scandal,” Mejri said.The court gave its green light on December 1 and the marriage agreement was signed on December 5, he said.A wedding party had been planned for Sunday but was cancelled after the government’s chil…

Antonio Guterres took the oath of office on Monday as the United Nations’ new secretary-general during a formal ceremony at the General Assembly.The former prime minister of Portugal pledged to “exercise in all loyalty, discretion and conscience” his duties as UN chief when he takes over from Ban Ki-moon on January 1.He vowed  to carry out reforms to improve the world body.“The UN must be ready to change,” Guterres told the General Assembly.

Court nullifies A’Ibom inheritance tradition!!!

AN Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Ikot Ekpene Judicial Division, has nullified the practice among Annang people where female children are denied their deceased parents’ inheritance. The court presided over by Justice Ntong Ntong, said the practice was against good conscience and unconstitutional in the present day realities, declaring it null and void and of no effect. On the other hand, the judge also declared that for the son to inherit the main building of his father and his personal effects to the exclusion of the female children in Annang tradition was not repugnant to natural justice and good conscience. The declaration is contained in a judgment delivered Wednesday in a 2014 suit filed by one Mrs. Joyce Obot (formerly known as Joyce Akpan) against her stepbrother, Idorenyin Akpan, as the respondent. A teenage girl who is selling her virginity to the highest bidder online has been offered £1.7 million by a rich businessman.The 18-year-old, Aleexandra Khefren, 18, working with German escort agency Cinderella Escorts, had initially set the price at £850,000.Khefren’s parents had threatened her saying if she went ahead with selling herself, they would disown her.This resulted in a storm of publicity and a flood of high bids.Cinderella Escorts is reportedly taking 20% of the proceeds – with bidding set to close in February.The company said, “The date takes place in Germany.
